And the Phoenix flies straight and high back to Avalon
Now I'm on my way back where I belong...
More from my mobile phone tomorrow. For today, Avalon calls and I answer.
See you on the flip side.

While others are relieved Christmas is over and already packing away the tree and decorations and donating ill thought out gifts to charity, I am relieved that hopefully I won't have to hear "Do They Know It's Christmas" by Band Aid (I realise I may have to put up with it until New Year - *puke*).
I remember when that song first came out and saw the video on MTV. I was 15 and I remember thinking that it was so cool that these people got together to help the poor starving kids in Ethiopia.
Then I grew up and got an education (not necessarily in that order).
The more I hear that song, the more I hate it because of the stupidity of the lyrics, especially the line, "And there won't be snow in Africa this Christmas time."
Gee, why do you think that is? It couldn't possibly be because they're close to the equator and have a tropical monsoon climate, could it? I know technically they're in the northern hemisphere but that doesn't mean they should have snow. Even their highlands don't get snow. DUH!
But what really irritates me is the penultimate question and title of the song, "Do they know it's Christmas time at all?" Well, had Bob done his homework he would know that Christians make up over half the population of Ethiopia and that even the poorest villages have Christian churches. It's pretty arrogant to assume just because they're starving they don't know it's Christmas. Seems to me they definitely know it's Christmas. One can say this of many African countries. Christianity is quite popular in Africa. Just because some of the Muslims refuse to convert or some who practice their old religions does not mean the good people of Africa are bereft of Jesus.
I could say a lot more about the whole subject, like how Band Aids don't heal wounds, they only protect them and soon enough they fall off and how this one has majorly fallen off and not actually done anything to solve the problems they were trying to raise money for, but I'll leave that.
The fact this song comes back year after year just irritates me and I'll be glad to be rid of it for another year. It'd be better if I could be rid of it forever but that's a wish I'll not likely get granted.

Pretty mellowed out here today. Just finished dinner and watching Dr. Who! Looking forward to seeing the next episode on New Year's Day.
Another short entry today as I get back to TV watching. The Chrimbo Eastenders will be on in an hour. We do lead an exciting life! Mom is already hooked on Eastenders. lol

Because the guy who's been actually doing work, even brought up a bill for single-payer, said this bill is worth supporting, and you think you know better, so you're gonna go side with the people who don't think we should have health care (reform) *at all*. Ooooookayy.
Listen, if I'm going to be supporting actual moderate-to-conservatives going under the progressive flag, I'm at least going to stick with the ones who aren't complete fucking boneheaded losers. That would be the ones who got elected into office and are at least *trying* to make some kind of useful policy that will *help* *some* actual people be better able to not, you know, die.
Dear Santa...Dear Santa, This year I've been busy! In January I saved a busload of nuns in Angola (326 points). In August I donated bone marrow to Overall, I've been naughty (-365 points). For Christmas I deserve a spanking! Sincerely, |

Can anyone who's read Spotlight: Arcee answer something for me?
In that comic, are the mechs considered gender-neutral until Arcee is "made femme," or is everyone a guy until Arcee is experimented on? Because if the latter, I'm really uncomfortable with the idea that being a woman is freakish.
I mean, I'm one of the last people to say something has to match political norms to be "okay to read," and I'm certainly not saying it's not OK that someone wrote it or that people shouldn't enjoy it... but, well, for me personally... the idea that "she" is what happens when you take a world of "he" and start tinkering and create a monster (and, from what I gather from plot summaries, Arcee ends up badass because -- ze? he? I'm fairly sure "she" is actually not the proper pronoun, given that the gendering is nonconsensual -- because ze hates what was done to hir and vows revenge.)
I'm not sure that I'm comfortable with that. I wondered in another thread on this if a woman wrote it, which is again not like me. But... again, I just have a bit of a visceral twitch at the idea of a dude, however artistic, writing about women this way... particularly if all mechs are default-men, rather than default-nongendered (though, again, I admit I do not know how it is portrayed.)
And, again, I may be speaking out of ignorance here, but it also bothers me a bit that a character that is famous for being one of the first femmes (I still don't like that word, but I want to be clear I'm talking about gender and not some analog of "sex") is made "cool" by having not been originally that way. (Despite that I, and I know others, think she was a rather uncool token as created.) It strikes me as having a whiff of -- intended or not -- "a femme character would not be cool on her own. She has to have a non-femme past."
And, again, if Arcee was the equivalent of a man at first, that reminds me of a human history that has for a long time told us all that women are secondary, an afterthought in a man's world... however delightfully asskicking they may be.
So again, I... hope that isn't what it implied.
I'd like to read it, but not pay to do so, so I know what I'm talking about without giving money for it if it bothers me (*hint hint bludgeon*)

ALSO: MOAR FALLENBASHING NAO PLZ
Time marches on and yesterday I missed another posting; largely because I was so busy trying to get crap done that when I got the opportunity, I didn't feel like it. That and I had a lot of people about and it's hard for me to concentrate on writing when there is too much activity around me.
We managed to go out on Sunday with Mom. TT3 and I took her to see the Tower of London. She really wanted to see the crown jewels as she's read a lot about them. I wanted to see the new Henry the VIII exhibit. I did warn Mom she might find it all disappointing. She did. When we went through she said, "Is that all?" 'Fraid so. The Henry the VIII exhibit was ok. Some of the things I had seen before, but they had a few more of his things out and they "fleshed it out" (pun intended) by showing his armour through his life time. According to their little movie which they ran at the beginning, Henry was over 6' tall but I had a hard time seeing it. All his armour looked to be quite short. Ah well...
Mom did pretty well with the Tower. She has some difficulty walking but managed it ok with breaks. Yesterday we were supposed to go out and do a bus tour of London but she wanted to rest, so I took the opportunity to clean, do laundry and sort out paperwork that's been sitting about. She seems to be really concerned about the weather and while I guess I can't blame her, I guess I feel lucky that I do not necessarily live my life by the weather. There's a call for rain today. So far there's not a cloud in the sky but of course this can always change. We'll see how it goes.

As unhappy as I am with some other things, I just have to squee over this. I know, I know, to some people if one thing is wrong it's all wrong. Still... (reposted from the Capitol Insider newsletter of the Disability Policy Collaboration):
On Saturday, December 19, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and Senator Ben Nelson (D-NE) reached agreement on a package of amendments to the Senate health reform bill. [snip]
On Saturday, December 19, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and Senator Ben Nelson (D-NE) reached agreement on a package of amendments to the Senate health reform bill. [snip]
The $871 billion bill includes the following provisions which are of major importance to people with disabilities:
- Major insurance market reforms including elimination of pre-existing condition exclusions and annual and lifetime caps;
- Coverage of rehabilitation and habilitation services and devices in the essential benefits package for the new insurance Exchange;
- An expansion of Medicaid eligibility up to 133% of the federal poverty level;
- The Community Living Assistance Services and Supports (CLASS) Act which will establish a new nation wide long term services insurance program that will help individuals and their families meet their needs without needing to be impoverished;
- The Community First Choice (CFC) Medicaid option which will make comprehensive community-based services available to Medicaid beneficiaries in states which choose the option (it would begin on Oct 1, 2010 with no sunset date); and
- A requirement for the development of standards for accessible diagnostic and other medical equipment.
Inclusion of the CLASS Act was a great victory for the disability community. It had been uncertain in the last week as Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) worked to ensure the 60th vote from Senator Ben Nelson (D-NE). Nelson had mentioned the CLASS Act as a concern to him, but in the end, the CLASS Act was kept in.

- Is anyone else having problems with LJ eating line breaks when they post? It's been happening to me for a couple days now and is driving me batty.
As much as I love to have people IM me, I hate the following:
There exists apparently some kind of swinger site out there with profiles. Someone there goes, apparently, by "trinityva," or something close enough to it for horny foolish dudes to mistake me for that person, anyway.
Hence, I get all kinds of "hey saw ur profile on $blee" IMs.
And when I'm understandablycautious seeing an IM from some random dude who can't spell UH, WHERE THE FUCK DID YOU FIND ME, MOUTH BREATHER they get all flusterated because I absolutely must have desired their attention.
After all, I have a profile! *facepalm*

Title: Bright Ideas
Characters: Starscream, mentions of Megatron/Starscream and Optimus/Starscream
Verse: My own weird thingy; same 'verse as The Beginning of the End and Inception, except more... cracky.
Wordcount: 850+
Rating: I'm going to say M for some mentions of sexytime, but... none happens explicitly here.
Warnings: Hmmm. Not sure. Again, mentions of sexual stuff, but nothing explicit.
Summary: This is a gift for
pellimusprime, who wanted some OP/SS. I tried to write something longer and explicit and entertainingly cracky, but Optimus just wouldn't come out right. Starscream was fine, but Optimus just seemed silly in places. Even though it was meant to be crack I didn't like making him less than epic. Since the Starscream bits were fine I decided to write this thing, which is entirely from his point of view. Which, yes, means I fail at writing Autobots, at least for the moment. Damn you, good guys! >_< Pell, I hope you like your silly crack, and I'm sorry it's so short.

It's been a full couple of days but good nonetheless and I am soooo tired right now.
I wish everyone a joyous solstice and pray that the return of the light bring hope for the coming spring.
Only a short post today as there will hopefully be more busy-ness tomorrow. Although we had some major snow tonight so may not be going anywhere tomorrow. Fingers crossed!

Poopy....I missed another day posting yesterday. I had all these good intentions yesterday but I thought I'd wait until the end of the day when I might have something more interesting to post about. Ha!
Well, we baked a bit yesterday. Actually, we didn't bake at all, just made candy. Our teeth will be rotten if we have it our way! And then I made a big roast dinner for our big family meal this week. So yesterday a lot of time was spent in the kitchen.
Mom is doing ok in the meantime. It's been so cold, she just doesn't want to go anywhere, so she's not set foot outside our flat (save to go to the hallway and smoke) since she got here on Thursday. She's not even seen the area in which we live or outside the house much, just what she saw when she walked from the Tube to our house. Today we're going to the Tower of London though so hopefully this goes well.
And speaking of Mom's smoking, my friends list know how much an issue this was for my mom prior to coming as she smokes like a fiend. We don't smoke and don't allow smoking in our house. She respects this and we respect that she chooses to smoke (even if we don't like it) so the happy medium is she goes out into our building's hallway and opens a window.
But we've all been pleasantly surprised at how well she's been doing. She's been using e-cigarettes and nicotine lozenges and has had only 3 cigarettes per day since she's been here. Which is a far cry from the pack or so a day she was going through. Who knows, maybe this trip will see her finally cut down (possibly) or quit (not bloody likely! She's got a psychological addiction to them as well).
Overall, the visit is going well, just wish it was a bit warmer. It's just not usually this cold until January but then maybe the planet decided it was time to go back to the way things used to be and make it cold in December. :/
On a side note, my writer's block post made on 10th December was excerpted by LJ in their recent news post here. There were nearly 1400 entries to that prompt and mine made the top 10! Yay! *puffs chest proudly* The fact that I've been busy with life has every bearing on the fact it's taken me 4 days since they made their post to see it....
